When it was under development in the 1960s, some of the goals for Thorncliff were to contain urban sprawl, and to ensure access to key transportation routes. The neighbourhood connects to Whitemud Drive, allowing easy travel to the Southgate Shopping Mall, University of Alberta, as well as Fort Edmonton Park.

Thorncliff Homes
Most of the homes here were built in the 1970s, but some homes were built both before and after this period. The neighbourhood is made up of primarily apartments and condominiums, though there are some single family residences here, too. About half the homes in the neighbourhood are rentals, thus the neighbourhood is somewhat transient. Areas surrounding Thorncliff are Summerlea to the north, Callingwood North to the south, Aldergrove at the west and Elmwood at the east.
